Before it was The Shop, 610 University Drive was the Dakota Tractor Company — where local craftsmen built the machines that broke Dakota ground. The floors are still worn where the assembly line ran. The beams overhead are the same ones that held the roof up on the first tractor to leave this building.
Today a restored John Deere Model A — the founder's great-grandfather's — sits in the main hall. Not as décor. As a standard. It's a reminder that the people who first worked in this building bet their lives on what they could make with their hands, and that the ground beneath us has always rewarded that kind of nerve.
